My Stem Cell Donation Story

I joined the National Marrow Donor Registry when I was in college. My girlfriend (who is now my wife) and I had been dating for a while at that point and we both registered together. I remember always keeping my phone nearby during the next few weeks just in case I got a call. I didn’t, of course and, as time passed, I forgot all about the registration.

Then, in the summer of 2018, I got a call asking me to interview to be a possible stem cell donor. I didn’t know the person who would be receiving my stem cells. The only information I got from Be the Match was that it was a 48-year-old man with myelodysplastic syndrome who lived in a different country . But I ended up being a match for him and went through the donation process from start to finish.

Below is the six-part blog series I wrote about my experiences during the process. If you’re not already registered, I hope you’ll consider joining. You can do so here. It’s one of the few ways that we can literally save a person’s life.
